Bomb kills 30 Shia Muslims in Pakistan Fri, 20 Feb 2009 07:23:00 GMT Activists protest against Shia killings in Pakistan Thirty people are killed and sixty five others injured after a bomb ripped through a funeral procession of a Shia Muslim leader in a NW Pakistan. The explosion took place on Friday morning in Dera Ismail Khan, a town close to northwestern tribal belt, according to a Press TV correspondent. The attackers targeted the funeral of the leader who was gunned down Thursday by the Taliban and its allied anti-Shia groups on Thursday. "Thirty people have died and some 65 are injured" medics said, adding the death toll may rise further as some of the inured were in critical condition. But some local media reports put the number of the injured at about a hundred. Authorities have imposed a curfew in the city. Pakistan's Prime Minister has condemned the attack. In early February, at least 35 Shia Muslims were killed and 50 others injured after a bomb exploded in the town of Dera Ghazi Khan in the central Punjab province. Local Pakistani media say Taliban-linked militants in Parachinar, Hangu district and much of the Kurram tribal agency have killed 25 to 30 people on a daily basis during the last six months. Moderate Pakistani Sunni groups believe that leaving Shias at the mercy of the Taliban is a conspiracy against the country. Taliban's influence is also rapidly increasing its grip on the major cities and even the so-called settled areas of the country. Some reports have cited grave human rights abuses against Shias in the northwestern Pakistani city of Parachinar. Shias make up more than a quarter of Pakistan's 160 million-strong population. Since the 1980s, thousands of people have been killed in violence-related incidents in Pakistan by extremist groups.
